Activate a BlackBerry Phone

These steps may be followed for a BlackBerry device ONLY if you have a data plan from your vendor that allows for a BlackBerry Enterprise Solution (BES) connection and you have contacted IT for a BlackBerry Enterprise Server license.

These steps will allow the device to sync wirelessly with the college Exchange server (i.e. your email, calendar, contacts, and tasks will be pushed to the device directly).

Note: If you purchased a BlackBerry device with a data plan for "personal" email accounts with a BlackBerry Internet Solution (BIS), you will not be able to connect to the college Exchange server.

Activation Steps

Note:  These steps may be followed for a BlackBerry device ONLY if you have a data plan from your vendor that allows for a BlackBerry Enterprise Solution (BES) connection and you have contacted IT for a BlackBerry Enterprise Server license. If you have not had the BlackBerry device added to our BES server, these steps will NOT work.

Note: These are general steps. Your device may have these commands in different locations. Check your User Guide for details on the Setup if these steps are not clear.

Note: Follow the procedure in your User Guide to select and "click" options from dialog boxes. You may have either a trackball or trackwheel to select an item. You will then press and hold down the trackball or trackwheel to Click.

  1. From the Home screen of the BlackBerry, highlight Options and Click.
  2. Click on Date/Time and set the time to Eastern.
  3. Go back to the Home screen of the BlackBerry.

Note: You will likely need to go through the Setup Wizard. Or, on the Home screen of the BlackBerry you may have an Activate icon.

Note: We will assume that you will be using the Setup Wizard. Check your User Guide for details.

  4. Highlight Run Setup Wizard and Click.
  5. Roll the trackwheel to highlight Next and Click.
  6. Complete the instructions on the screen.
  7. Locate and follow the Email Setup steps.
  8. Select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server option and Click.
  9. Enter your PSU email address as follows -- UserID@psu.edu  Example: ntv1@psu.edu
  10. Enter the activation password -- me  (Note: this password, me, is the same for everyone)
  11. Select Activate and Click.

Note: If the process fails, re-enter the email address and password and attempt to activate the device again. If it fails again, contact Computer Support.

Note: Once the activation  process starts, allow it to complete. This may take 5 to 10 minutes. You should be able to return to the  Home screen of the BlackBerry and verify that your data is present.

Wipe  Handheld Steps

Note: These are general steps. Your device may have these commands in different locations. These steps are included here in case you are unable to activate the BlackBerry. 2. Display the menu and select Wipe Handheld.
  3. Select the Include third-party applications check box.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Type blackberry, and then press the Enter key.

Note: It will take a few moments to wipe and restart the device.

  6. Go back to the first section and run the Setup Wizard again.
