Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection for Software Install

Software installers may ask you to disable temporarily your AntiVirus and Spyware Prevention programs. These steps will walk you through turning off the recommended software in use in the College of Ag Sciences, Symantec Endpont Protection or SEP.

These steps are written for computers with Windows XP Professional.

Request Symantec Endpoint Protection Access

Note: Users are not allowed to temporarily disable Symantec Endpoint Protection due to security concerns (if you Right Click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon the words Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection will be grayed out). We need to know the Service Tag of the machine in order to temporarily allow you to 'Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection' via the SEP shield. You can then install you software and re-enable SEP.

  1. Submit an Ag IT Help Desk Form. In the Problem Details field, you must include "Disable SEP for Software Install" as well as the Service Tag # of the Enterprise Dell computer.

  2. Computer Support will email you back that SEP may now be disabled.

Note: This change should not take more than five minutes. If 'Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection' remains grayed out, Right Click on the SEP shield and select Update Policy. Wait another few minutes. You shoudl be able to disable SEP at that point. If not, contact Computer Support.

  3. Right Click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon (looks like a Yellow Shield with a green dot) in the lower right corner of the screen and then Left Click on the words Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Note: Symantec Endpoint Protection' is now temporarily disabled. YOU SHOULD NOW BE ABLE TO INSTALL YOUR SOFTWARE

  4. Once the software is installed, Right Click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon in the lower right corner of the screen and then Left Click on the words Enable Symantec Endpoint Protection.

  5. Send Computer Support an Email to report that you have enabled SEP again.
