Compress a FileMaker Pro 4.x File


A compressed copy is a compact copy of a FileMaker Pro 4.x file that contains all the contents of the original file. A compressed copy takes up less disk space and will run somewhat faster than the original file. You should compress a FileMaker file that you use on a regular basis.


  1. Open the file
  1. From the File Menu, choose Open. Open the file you want to compress.
  2. Enter password if needed, ex: Edit. Click OK.

  1. Compress the file
  1. From the File Menu, choose Save a Copy As...
  2. In the Save dialog box, the file will be given the name Copy of filename.
  3. Click and hold on the pop-up menu to the right of the words "Type."
  4. Select "compressed copy (smaller)." Click Save.

  1. Quit FileMaker and trash the original file
  1. After the compression is complete, from the File menu, choose Exit or press Alt + F4
  2. Delete the original file. (Right-click on the file and choose Delete.)
  3. Empty your Recycle Bin. (Right-click on your Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.)

  1. Rename the compressed file
  1. Rename Copy of filename to the original filename. (Ex: Copy of Travel to Travel).
