Create & Apply Styles in Excel


A style is a collection of formats that are saved in an application and are applied as a group. Excel has many pre-defined styles but when none of the built-in styles meet your requirements, you can create a custom style.You can also modify a custom or built-in style.



How To Apply a Style:

  1. Select the cell or range of cells you want to apply a style.
  2. From the Format menu choose Style.
  3. Click the Style name drop-down arrow.
    • Instead of Steps 2 and 3, you may use the Styles box in the Formatting toolbar.
  4. Select the appropriate style.
  5. Press Enter or OK.

How to Create a Custom Style:

  1. Select a cell that already has the combination of formats you want to include in the new style.
  2. From the Format menu choose Style to open the Style dialog box
  3. In the Style name box, enter the name of the new style.
  4. Click OK to define the new style.

How to Modify an Existing Style:

  1. From the Format menu choose Style to open the Style dialog box
  2. From the Style name drop-down list, select the style you want to modify.
  3. Click the Modify button to open the Format Cells dialog box.
  4. Select the formats you want to add to (or remove from) the style.
  5. Click OK to close the Format Cells dialog box.
  6. Click OK to close the Style dialog box.
