Customize Toolbars & Menus in Excel
Excel has many toolbars and menus that you can turn on and off. You can customize these by removing or adding buttons to fit your needs and preferences.
A toolbar is either docked or floating. Docked toolbars are attached to the edge of the Program window, while floating toolbars appear suspended over the worksheet. You can dock and toolbar just like you can make any toolbar floating.
As with toolbars, you can also customize menus by adding or deleting commands.
How To Show or Hide Toolbars:
- Right click on a Toolbar
- Observe the shortcut menu
- Select the toolbar you want to on or off.
- The ones with a check beside it are turned on.
How To Move toolbars:
- Observe the toolbar you want to move or make floating.
- Point to the left side of the docked toolbar.
- You should see a vertical row of 2 dotted lines.
- Click, hold and drag the toolbar to it's new location.
- Release your mouse.
How To Dock toolbars:
- Observe the floating toolbar you want to dock.
- Point to the top of the floating toolbar.
- Click, hold and drag the toolbar to it's new location.
- Release your mouse.
How To Customize your toolbars:
- From the Tools menu choose Customize to open the Customize dialog box.
- Click the Commands tab.
- From the Categories list, select the category of the command you want to find.
- From the Commands list, select the desired command.
- Drag the command onto the desired toolbar.
- Repeat Steps 3 to 5 for adding additions buttons.
- Click Close when finished.
How To Reset your toolbars:
- From the Tools menu choose Customize to open the Customize dialog box.
- Click the Toolbars tab.
- Select the Toolbar you want to reset back to default.
- Click Reset.
- Click OK to the confirmation dialog box.
- Repeat Steps 3 to 5 to reset addition toolbars.
- Click Close when finished.
How To Customize your menus: Windows only
- Be VERY CAREFUL when following these steps. It is very easy to lose menus.
- From the Tools menu choose Customize to open the Customize dialog box
- Click the Commands tab.
- From the Categories list, select the menu to which you want to add a command.
- From the Commands list, select the command you want to add.
- Drag the selected command onto the appropriate menu.
- Repeat Steps 4 to 6 for additional menu additions.
- Click Close when finished.
How To Customize your menus: Macintosh only
- Be VERY CAREFUL when following these steps. It is very easy to loose menus.
- From the Tools menu choose Customize to open the Customize dialog box
- Click the Toolbars tab.
- Check Worksheet Menu Bar.
- Another menu bar appears under your existing toolbars.
- Click the Commands tab.
- From the Categories list, select the menu to which you want to add a command.
- From the Commands list, select the command you want to add.
- Drag the selected command onto the appropriate menu using the new menu bar that appears after Step 4.
- Repeat Steps 5 to 8 for additional menu additions.
- Click Close when finished.
How To Restore your menus:
To remove the toolbar command:
- From the Tools menu choose Customize to open the Customize dialog box
- Click the Commands tab.
- Click on the menu that contains a command you want to remove.
- Select the command and right click on it.
- Choose Delete from the drop-down list.
- Repeat Steps 3 to 5 for additional menu removals.
- Click Close when finished.
