Install Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 web browser was released on Oct 18th, 2006. IT is supporting this version of Internet Explorer. Be aware that some sites may not display as they have in the past.

 

This browser goes further to defend you from phishing and malicious software. IE7's new Phishing Filter and more secure opt-in dialog boxes will help keep you more secure. You will also notice more security prompts as you work.

 

Some of the new features for IE7 include: Tabbed browsing (especially with QuickTabs), RSS feeds, Shrink-to-Fit printing, customizable search box, and a new design that leaves more screen real estate for the web site viewing. Note: These steps are written for College of Ag Sciences Enterprise computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Prepare for the Install

1. Print and follow the steps in How To Empty TEMP Folders.
2. Print and follow the steps in How To Disable Symantec AV & Spyware Prevention to temporarily disable your AntiVirus and Spyware Prevention programs.
3. If you have a handheld, remove it from its cradle.
4. Close all running programs except for Internet Explorer.
5. Validate that your Windows XP install is genunine by following these steps:
   1. Go to the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) site.
      http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validate.aspx
   2. When asked to install the WGA software, click Install.
   3. You should see a Validation Complete! message.
      
      Note: If the Windows Genuine Validation process fails, do not proceed with the install. Stop here. Contact Computer Support for assistance.

Download Internet Explorer 7 Installer

1. Go to this website:
   http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx
   
2. Click the Download button for the Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) version.
3. You should be prompted to click Save. Then click the Desktop button. (This will copy the Installer to the desktop). Click Save.
   Note: This file is not large at 14.8 MB in size. During the install process the remaining portion will be downloaded.
   
4. If a Download Complete window appears, click Close.
5. Exit Internet Explorer.

Install Internet Explorer 7

1. From the desktop, double-click on the "IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe" file.
2. Click Run. Wait for the files to extract.
3. At the Welcome screen, click Next.
4. At the License terms screen, click I Accept.
5. At the Validate your copy of Windows screen, click Validate.
   
6. At the Get the latest updates screen, click Next.
7. Wait while updates for Windows Internet Explorer 7 are downloaded, the MIcrosoft Malicious Software Removal tool is run, Internet Explorer required updates and Core Components are installed. The entire process may take from 10 to 30 minutes.
8. When complete, click Restart Now (Recommended).
9. Log back in to the computer.
10. Re-enable your your AntiVirus and Spyware Prevention programs. See the final section of the above How To.

Configure Internet Explorer 7

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Wait for the program to load the first time.
   
   Note: IE7 attempts to connect to a http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx ... not your normal home page. If the process hangs, you may need to close Internet Explorer and re-open.
   
   
3. At the Welcome Screen, you are asked to choose a default search provider, choose Keep my current default search provider.
4. Under Optional settings, choose Turn on automatic Phishing Filter (recommended).
5. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click Save Settings.
   
   Note: You can take the tour and explore add-ons later if you want.
   
   
6. Click the Go to your home page button.
   
   Note: You will see the new tabbed browser interface of IE 7. In the "tab" at the top of the page you should see the name of your home page. Just to the right of this 1st tab will be a small square. This is new Tab icon. You need to setup how your Tabs will work.
   
   
7. Click the New Tab icon or press the Ctrl + T keys. You will see the "You've opened a new tab" welcome page. Place a check in the Don't show this page again box.
   
   Note: To see more tab shortcuts, click the Show more tab shortcuts link.
   
   
8. When ready to proceed, click Close.
   
   Note: By default, you will see a "blank" page or tab. To edit these settings (and others), look for the Tools icon in the upper right corner of the window (has a gear icon followed by the word Tools).
   
   
9. Click the Tools icon.
10. From the Tools menu choose Internet Options.
11. In the Tabs section, click Settings.
    
    Note: You can set these options to best suit how you use Internet Explorer. Here are some recommendations to get you started.
    
    
12. In the Enable Tabbed Browsing (requires restarting Internet Explorer) section:
    Un-check 'Warn me when closing multiple tabs'
    Select (check) 'Always switch to new tabs when they are created'
    Select (check) 'Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page'
    
    Tip: Quick Tabs provides a miniature thumbnail view of all your open tabs when you click its icon. The Quick Tab icon is to the left of the 1st tab. Looks like 4 small buttons. Using Quick Tabs makes it easier to find a webpage to view. Leave this choice checked.
    
    
13. In the When a pop-up is encountered and Open links from other programs in sections, leave the default choices as is.
    
    Note: To turn off tabbed browsing completely, un-check the Enable Tabbed Browsing (requires restarting Internet Explorer) box.
    
    
14. To close the Tabbed Browser settings box, click OK.
    
    
15. In the Browsing History section, click Settings.
16. Set the Amount of disk space to use to 10 Mb.
    Set the Days to keep pages in History to 5 or less.
    Click OK.
    
    Note: By default IE7 uses Live Seach as its search engine. If you want to change this setting, follow Steps 15 - 16.
    
    
17. In the Search section, click Settings. Click the Find more providers link.
18. To choose a new provider, click it's link and then click Add Provider. You can continue to add as many as you want. When done, close this window. To cancel at any time, just close this window.
    
    Note: If you did add providers, to verify the new Search settings, in the Search section, click Settings. You should see the list of providers you added. Click OK.
    
    KEY STEP: If you use SharePoint sites and Outlook Web Access, you need to add these sites to your trusted **Local Intranet** sites found under the security settings. Follow Steps 17 - 18.
    
    
19. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab.
    
20. Click the Local Intranet icon.
    Click the Sites button. Click the Advanced button.
    Un-check 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone'
    In the Add this website to the zone line, highlight and remove the about:blank entry.
    Enter the following entries in this line. Click Add after each entry. When done, you should 2 entries.
    
    http://sts.ag.psu.edu
    https://exchange.ag.psu.edu
    
    
21. Click Close.Click OK.
    
    Note: IE7 should use your privacy settings from the previous installation. These may be left as is. You can also choose to set Privacy to IE7's default.
    
    
22. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Privacy tab.
23. Click the Default button. Click Apply.
    
    Note: IE7 should use your Advanced settings from the previous installation. These may be left as is. You can also choose to set these settings to ICT's recommended settings.
    
    
24. Click the Advanced tab.
25. In the Browsing section:
    Un-check 'Enable third party browser extensions*'
    Select (check) 'Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)'
    Un-check 'Use smooth scrolling'
26. Scroll down to the Search from the Address bar section.
    Select 'Do not search from the Address bar'
    
27. Scroll down to the Security section.
    Select (check) 'Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed'.
28. Click Apply. Click OK.
    
    Note: You now have the basics for IE7.
    
    Tip: To see the Menu bar, click the Tools icon. From the Tools menu choose Menu Bar.
    
    Tip: IE7 gives you much more control over deleting your History, Cookies, etc. Click the Tools icon. From the Tools menu choose Internet Options. In the Browsing History section, click Delete. Choose from any of five available choices or click Delete All to clear everything.

Internet Explorer 7 Release Notes

Note: The following information is from the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7. This is not the complete notes. Only those items that may impact our use in the College is listed.

1. Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Web Access (OWA)--When a user logs out of an Outlook Web Access server, any other sites open in other tabs in the same Internet Explorer window might be logged out if those sites use cookies to establish logon sessions.
   
   
2. Internet Connection Settings--If you notice a problem connecting to websites, it might be because the upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 changed your Internet connection settings from what they were set at in Internet Explorer 6. To work around the problem, follow these steps:
   
   
   1. Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
   2. Click the Connections tab.
   3. Click the first entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list, and then click Settings.
   4. Select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
   5. Repeat the previous two steps for each entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list.
   6. Click the Lan Settings button in the Connections tab, and repeat steps 4-6. Click OK on the Connections tab.
   7. Close Internet Explorer, and then restart it.
      
      
3. Toolbars that are incompatible with Internet Explorer 7--If you are having problems with Internet Explorer 7 hanging, crashing, silently closing or other bizarre behavior, an incompatible toolbar or other add-on maybe involved. The fastest way to determine if an add-on is causing the problem is to run Internet Explorer 7 with no add-ons. You can do this by going to Start, clicking All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and click Internet Explorer (No add-ons). This disables all add-ons from loading in that instance of Internet Explorer. If the problem goes away, you can manually disable specific add-ons to find the specific one causing the problem. See the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 for these steps and a list of toolbars that have known issues or have updates available.
   
   
4. RSS feed detection button--Internet Explorer 7 uses a link in the HTML source code of a webpage to enable the feed discovery button located on the Command Bar. If a page does not have that link element, Internet Explorer 7 does not detect the feed. See the Internet Explorer Blog entry for details.
   
   
5. Starting Internet Explorer without incompatible browser extensions or malware--If you have incompatible browser extension or add-ons installed, or have symptoms of spyware or malware, use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES) to reset Internet Explorer’s settings.
