Change the Default Envelope Fonts in Word 2007
Updating the font used by envelopes in Word 2007 can be tricky. These steps will walk you through updating the styles that control the font used by the Normal template.
Ensure that Prompt to update style checkbox is selected
Since you will be updating a Word style, you need to double check that you will be prompted to save your changes.

Open Word 2007. Create a blank document.

From the Office button select Word Options.

Click the Advanced tab.

In the Editing options section, place a check in the Prompt to update style box.

Within the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Save section.

In the Save section, place a check in the Prompt before saving Normal template box.
Tip: If you scroll to the end of the Advanced options, you will see General section. You can type your return address in the Mailing address box. Word stores the address so that you can use it whenever you want to insert your return address in a document.

Click OK.
Update the Envelope Address Style
These steps will allow you to update the "Envelope Address" style.

In the blank document, enter a dummy address. This will help you see your new font and style.

Select (highlight) this text.

On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click the More Styles button.

From the drop down list, click the Apply Styles command at the bottom of the dialog box.
Note: You should need Normal listed in the Style Name box. You will be applying the Envelope Address style in order to modify this style.

Remove the word Normal from the Style Name box. Enter Envelope Address.
Note: You should see the dummy address move to the center of the page. The Style Name box remains open. You can now edit the font to suit your needs.

Click the Modify button.

From the Format drop down list in the lower left choose Font. Set the font to your choice.

Key Step: Select the New documents based on this template radio button. Click OK.

Click the Close (x) button in the Apply Styles dialog box.

Close the Word document with the dummy text. When asked, do not save changes.

Key Step: Exit Word.

When asked, Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes?, click Yes.
Note: Your change to the Envelope Address style should now be set within Word's Normal Template.
Update the Envelope Return Style
These steps will allow you to update the "Envelope Return" style.

Open Word 2007. Create a blank document.

In the blank document, enter your Return Address. This will help you see your new font and style.

Select (highlight) this text.

On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click the More Styles button.

From the drop down list, click the Apply Styles command at the bottom of the dialog box

Remove the word Normal from the Style Name box. Enter Envelope Return.
Note: The Style Name box remains open. You can know edit the font to suit your needs.

Click the Modify button

From the Format drop down list in the lower left choose Font. Set the font to your choice.

Key Step: Select the New documents based on this template radio button. Click OK.

Click the Close (x) button in the Apply Styles dialog box.

Close the Word document with the Return Address. When asked, do not save changes.

Key Step: Exit Word.

Test by creating a new Envelope
These steps will allow you to test your edits by creating a new envelope.

Open Word 2007. Create a blank document.

Click the Mailings tab.

Click the Envelopes button.

Add a dummy Delivery address.

If needed, add a Return address.

Click the Add to Document button.
Note: You should see the text in the font size and style that you've chosen.
Tip: You can repeat the above steps at any time to modify (i.e. update) your font size and style.
Note: If you attempt to print an envelope from Word 2007 and all you see is computer gibberish, using these steps won't help you. Most likely you will need to switch the printer's driver to resolve this issue. Contact Computer Support for help if needed at
