Create Alt Tags in Dreamweaver

ALT tags are words that are attached to your graphics. Some people need to use a Card Reader to read web pages. This card reader doesn't read graphics, but can read the ALT tags attached to your graphic to give the reader an idea of why you have the graphic there.

ALT tags specify alternative text that appears in place of the image for text-only browsers or for browsers that have been set to download images manually.

Note: For visually impaired users who use speech synthesizers with text-only browsers, the text is spoken out loud. In some browsers, this text also appears when the pointer is over the image. Make sure that you put an ALT tag in your Property Inspector EVERY time you use a graphic.

This How To is written for version Dreawmeaver v4 and CS3 but may be used with other versions of Dreamweaver.

Add ALT Tags

  1. Click on a graphic.
  2. Look in your Property Inspector for the ALT box.
  3. Type words that explain that graphic.

Note: Use the word Image or Picture so it makes sense when the person hears it through the Reader.
