Use the Files Panel in Dreamweaver CS3

Dreamweaver has it's own FTP capabilities built into the program. This features makes it easy to upload, download, and maintain your web pages. Using the Files Panel can be easy if you follow these steps. By Default, the Files panel appear in the right side of your Dreamweaver window and it is in the collapsed mode.

Refer to: How To Create a Site File in Dreamweaver CS3 for information on setting up a Site. This must be completed before proceeding.

Dreamweaver includes a Files panel that helps you manage and transfer files to and from a remote server. When you transfer files between local and remote sites, parallel file and folder structures between the sites are maintained. When transferring files between sites, Dreamweaver creates corresponding folders if they do not yet exist in a site. You can also synchronize the files between your local and remote sites; Dreamweaver copies files in both directions as necessary and removes unwanted files when appropriate.

Dreamweaver includes a number of features for structuring a site, navigating within and between documents, and transferring files to a remote server. To make collaborative work on a web site easier, you can check in and check out files on the remote server to prevent others from working on the same files at the same time.

Also refer to Dreamweaver's Help files for more information.

Using the Files panel

The Files panel enables you to view files and folders, whether they are associated with a Dreamweaver site or not, and perform standard file maintenance operations, such as opening and moving files.

Note: In previous versions of Dreamweaver the Files panel was called the Site panel.

You can move the Files panel as necessary and set preferences for the panel.

Use this panel to perform the following tasks:

  • Access sites, a server, and local drives
  • View files and folders
  • Manage files and folders in the Files panel
  • Work with a visual map of your site

If needed, open the Files panel choose Window > Files. By default the panel displays in Collapsed mode *and appears in the right side of your Dreamweaver window.

Site file Indicates what site you are using currently. Lists remote sites you've defined. To switch sites, select a different site from the list.

Current view Indicates which view is in use. Changes the remote pane of the Site window so that it displays the file structure of the remote site. This is the default view for the Site window.

Connect/Disconnect (available with FTP setting only) Connects to or disconnects from the remote site.

Refresh Refreshes the site to show current files.

Get File(s) Copies the selected files from the remote site to your local site. If Enable File Check In and Check Out is on, the local copies are read-only; the files remain available on the remote site for other team members to check out. If file check in and check out is turned off, getting a file transfers a copy that has both read and write privileges. See Getting files from a remote server.

Put File(s) Copies the selected files from the local site to the remote site without changing the file's checked-in or checked-out status. See Putting files on a remote server.

Note: Three additional buttons appear in Expanded view: Site files, Testing server, Sitemap
