Should I Install?

This browser goes further to defend you from phishing and malicious software. IE7's new Phishing Filter and more secure opt-in dialog boxes will help keep you more secure. You will also notice more security prompts as you work.

Some of the new features for IE7 include: Tabbed browsing (especially with QuickTabs), RSS feeds, Shrink-to-Fit printing, customizable search box, and a new design that leaves more screen real estate for the web site viewing. For a quick overview of some of these new features, see the Internet Explorer 7 frequently asked questions page.

You are not required to update to IE7. While there are great new features, the newer browser will run slower on older EN machines.

Can I stop it?

You can choose to "not" install IE7 when the High Priority - Critical notification process downloads the initial installer to your computer. Once you select "Don’t Install" during the installation process, you will not be prompted to install at a later time. You will still have the option to install IE7 as an optional update from the Microsoft Update site or the Microsoft Download Center in the future.

  1. Wait until the High Priority - Critical update shield appears in your notification area (lower right corner of screen).

  2. If you place the mouse over the icon, you will see a message similar to the one below.

  3. Click on the upright Shield. Click the Custom Install (Advanced) button. Click Next.

Note: You should see 'Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP" as an available update. If you don't, then you can install any other updates listed in this window. If you see the IE7 update as well as other updates listed, de-select the IE7 update. Install the remaining updates. Restart. Wait for the High Priority - Critical update shield to appear again. Only proceed when the IE7 update is the only one listed.

  4. If the IE7 update is the only one listed, click Install.
  5. Click on the upright Shield so you can watch the progress.

Note: Don't be alarmed by the status window that shows IE7 installing, Allow the process to begin.

  6. A dialog box will appears that says "An upgrade to Internet Explorer is ready to be installed." You will see three choices: Ask Me Later, Don't Install, and Install.
  7. Click Don't Install.

Note: You will then see a message that "Updates were unable to be successfully installed." This is what we wanted to see. When you click Close in the next step, the upright Shield will be gone.

  8. Click Close. Done.
