Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 web browser was released on Oct 18th, 2006. ICT is supporting this version of Internet Explorer.

To learn more about IE7, see How To Decide if Internet Explorer 7 is for you?. This How To helps you decide if you should install IE7, stop it from installing it, or remove IE7 completely.

This How To assumes that you will be installing IE7 on your machine by downloading the installer and updating the machine directly. It is also possible that the IE7 may already be downloaded to your computer via Microsoft Critical updates. If this is the case, see Section 1, "IE7 downloaded as a Critical Update, now what?".

Note: These steps are written for College of Ag Sciences Enterprise computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Install Phishing Filter Update

Note: The new IE7 Phishing Filter evaluates an entire Web page when the page is opened. If a page contains a number of frames, the Phishing Filter may prevent it from loading. One example we have seen was a web based video conference using streaming QuickTime. The page never loaded with the Phishing Filter enabled. On Dec 12, 2006, Microsoft released an update to Internet Explorer 7. The update is designed to resolve slowdowns for Web pages containing a number of frames. The steps in this section are written for College Enterprise computers that are using Windows XP Service Pack 2.

  1. To download the update, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928089/.
  2. In the Update information section, click the Download the 928089 package now for Windows XP with Service Pack 2, x86-based versions.
  3. To validate the download, click Continue. If needed, click Install or Right Click on the Information Bar and click Install ActiveX control.
  4. Click Download. Click Save. Save the file to the Desktop. Click Save. Click Close.
  5. Exit Internet Explorer. Close any other open programs.
  6. Double Click on IE7-KB928089-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe. Click Run.
  7. In the Software Update window, click Next. Click I Agree. Click Next.
  8. Click Finish. Allow the machine to restart if needed.

Note: If this fix doesn't help, you can edit the Phishing Filter settings. Open IE 7. Click the Tools icon, select the Phishing Filter choice and from the pop-out menu choose Phishing Filter Settings. Scroll down to the Phishing Filter section. To leave the filter available but inactive, click Turn off automatic Web site checking. Click OK.

See Phishing Filter Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Internet Explorer 7 Release Notes

Note: The following information is from the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7. This is not the complete notes. Only those items that may impact our use in the College is listed.

  1. Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Web Access (OWA)--When a user logs out of an Outlook Web Access server, any other sites open in other tabs in the same Internet Explorer window might be logged out if those sites use cookies to establish logon sessions. Also, if you have installed the Microsoft Outlook Web Access S/MIME program (it will appear in the Add/Remove Programs control panel), you will not be able to Save or Send OWA mail using Premium mode. OWA in Basic mode works fine. You should remove the Microsoft Outlook Web Access S/MIME program to restore OWA functionality.

  2. Internet Connection Settings--If you notice a problem connecting to websites, it might be because the upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 changed your Internet connection settings from what they were set at in Internet Explorer 6. To work around the problem, follow these steps:
    1. Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Connections tab.
    3. Click the first entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list, and then click Settings.
    4. Select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
    5. Repeat the previous two steps for each entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list.
    6. Click the Lan Settings button in the Connections tab, and repeat steps 4-6. Click OK on the Connections tab.
    7. Close Internet Explorer, and then restart it.

  3. Toolbars that are incompatible with Internet Explorer 7--If you are having problems with Internet Explorer 7 hanging, crashing, silently closing or other bizarre behavior, an incompatible toolbar or other add-on maybe involved. The fastest way to determine if an add-on is causing the problem is to run Internet Explorer 7 with no add-ons. You can do this by going to Start, clicking All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and click Internet Explorer (No add-ons). This disables all add-ons from loading in that instance of Internet Explorer. If the problem goes away, you can manually disable specific add-ons to find the specific one causing the problem. See the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 for these steps and a list of toolbars that have known issues or have updates available.

  4. RSS feed detection button--Internet Explorer 7 uses a link in the HTML source code of a webpage to enable the feed discovery button located on the Command Bar. If a page does not have that link element, Internet Explorer 7 does not detect the feed. See the Internet Explorer Blog entry for details.

  5. Starting Internet Explorer without incompatible browser extensions or malware--If you have incompatible browser extension or add-ons installed, or have symptoms of spyware or malware, use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES) to reset Internet Explorer’s settings. See Reset Internet Explorer Settings on the Internet Explorer blog for more details.
