Trend Micro has an free on-line Virus and Security scanner. You can use this if you have Internet Access. Running this tool occasionally is a great double-check for the everyday Symantec AntiVirus and SpyBot products that should be installed on your College machine.

These steps are written for machines with Windows XP with Service Pack 2.


Use House Call to Scan for Grayware and Spyware
  1. Go here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
  2. Click the 1st Scan Now. It's Free! link.

    NOTE: Important Notes about HouseCall 6.5
    A. IE browser’s Security level must be set to Medium at least and signed ActiveX objects are enabled.

    B.
    When you click the next link, your system will be tested for these requirements.

  3. Click the 2nd Scan Now. It's Free! link.
  4. Click the Yes, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Launching HouseCall button.

    NOTE: The computer will be scanned to see which process you can use. If you see Fig 1, you can click either button. See steps 5 or 6. If you see Fig 2, you need to use the Browser Plug-in to scan, see Step 6. Both options do the same scan! The difference is in how they are launched.   5. Java-based scan
    1. Under Using Java-based HouseCall kernal, click Starting HouseCall.
    2. A Warning Security box appears. You may see different choices.
      If you see an "Always trust content from this publisher
      " box, un-check it. Click Run.
      If you don't see this box, simply click Yes.
    3. Click the Extended Select tab.
    4. Click these choices:
      Under Select folders to scan: Scan all folders on this computer
      Under Grayware and spyware: Scan this computer for spyware and grayware ...
    5. Click the Next button..
    6. Wait for the scan to run.
    7. Go to Step 7.

  6. Browser Plug-in scan
    1. Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using the HouseCall kernal, click Starting HouseCall.
    2. At the top of the window, you will be prompted to allow an ActiveX control to be installed. Click on "Click here to install ... " and choose Install ActiveX Control....
    3. Click Launching HouseCall. (Note: Don't click the Select a different HouseCall kernal box.)
    4. Click Install.
    5. If the Windows Firewall appears, click Unblock.
    6. Click the Extended Select tab.
    7. Click these choices:
      Under Select fiddlers to scan: Scan all folders on this computer
      Under Grayware and spyware: Scan this computer for spyware and grayware ...
    8. Wait for the scan to run.
    9. Go to Step 7.

  7. When finished, you will be taken to the Results tab. If not, click the Results tab.

  8. If nothing is found, you will see a "Yes, everything's alright" message. Simply close the window.

    If infections are found, under Cleanup Option, select Clean all detected .... Then click the Clean now button. Click OK. You will be prompted to scan the computer again, click OK if you have time to run the scan again. Otherwise, click Cancel.

NOTE: To restart HouseCall, click the Starting HouseCall link in the upper left corner of the window.

NOTE: You can look up infections in TrendMicro's Spyware/Grayware database.
