As of Jan 21, 2002, because of a contract between Penn State and Symantec, Norton AntiVirus software is now available at no cost to Penn State students, faculty, and staff. Norton Antivirus may be loaded on ONE REGISTERED university computer.

Users of older versions of Norton AntiVirus should consider uninstalling their previous version of Norton Antivirus and install Norton AntiVirus through the Penn State program. If you have purchased a full version of Norton System Works, you may keep this program. It includes Norton AntiVirus as well as system monitoring utilities.

But, if you only have Norton AntiVirus, you should switch to the "no cost" Penn State software. You will need to uninstall two Symantec products: Norton AntiVirus and LiveUpdate 1.x (Symantec Corporation).

This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Norton AntiVirus.

Removing Norton AntiVirus and Live Update
  1. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
  2. In the control panel, double-click on Add / Remove Programs
  3. Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
  4. For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
  5. When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
  6. Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
  7. Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
  8. Delete the c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton or (or c:\Program Files\NavNT) folder.
  9. Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
  10. Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
  11. If uninstalling Norton AntiVirus on Windows 95/98 and using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this web site to uninstall Norton AntiVirus manually (maintained by Symantec).
